Karen Porteous

Karen Porteous (aka Brownie) has been a stalwart of the club as player, coach, manager, committee member and vice-President, daughter and mother for over 30 years.  Her blood runs yellow and black.

Brownie joined the club in 1982 when the games were played on grass at Rosealde. This meant a trip into the countryside of Albany, walking over a one lane bridge and the hockey building was a tin garage. Brownie used to do club fundraising by marking out the grass fields with the line roller.

She played for the Prems for 22 years between 1983 and 2005 - over 400 games which is a club record.  Her last Prem game was a Grand Final loss against HDF which still hurts over 15 years' later.  Karen continues to proudly represent North Harbour and New Zealand at Masters level.

​

Her parents were patrons of the club with mother, Heather, still continuing in this role. Daughters Caitlyn and Michaela have also played for ABC. 

​

Today Brownie plays in Division 1 where she is a much respected player providing wise counsel and gentle leadership to a new generation of players.
